#718: "Consultant's Role"
|
Dear Partners in Conulting,
My primary role as a consultant is to advise the client on how things can be done more effectively, how to increase revenue, reduce costs, and operate with fewer problems. Is this correct?
This is certainly a critical part of the job, but often another equally important task for a consultant is to go beyond "advising" and to get the client to implement recommendations that will fix or improve their business. Here are three steps that you can take to help ensure action is taken:
-
Specify upfront and communicate the tangible benefits the client can expect to receive by implementing the recommendation.
-
Provide an estimate of costs and time to implement to your client.
-
Set a date in advance for a follow-up meeting to discuss the status of actions taken (or not!) on specific recommendations.
Tip: Regardless of how insightful our recommendation may be, they are worth very little to the client if they never get implemented.
